In the Community Learning Centres (CLC) network, we often struggle to explain what we do. That’s because the CLC is like an idea blowing across the province showing up in myriad ways. Here we share the stories so that you can see it and believe it too – CLCs make a huge difference to student engagement and the vitality of English Linguistic Minority communities across Quebec.

About CLCs

Community Learning Centres (CLCs) develop win-win partnerships between schools and community to support the English Linguistic Minority of Quebec, Canada. The CLC is premised on a belief that schools and communities both thrive when we work together in partnership.

Since 2006 the CLC initiative has incubated 37 project sites across 10 English School Boards of Quebec and with the Association of Jewish Day Schools.

Each CLC is a public school with a few twists – a CLC Coordinator runs something like a non-profit community centre out of one or more rooms at the school, guided by a community partnership table.

Each CLC also has a Video Conferencing unit, an important resource since a majority of CLCs are located in rural areas. This helps to keep the network connected and brings fascinating, affordable field trips to the students.

We are linked into a broader vision of community-schooling pioneered in the EU and USA, and especially relate to the Coalition for Community Schools. We are also strongly influenced by pedagogies of Service Based learning, particularly we want to give a shout out to the Community Works Institute.

A special thanks to our provincial and national partners who helped to fund these projects:
